Assembly of Syndicate Shareholders of ECA approves teams lists, format changes for 2023-24 EuroLeague, EuroCup

The Assembly of Syndicated Shareholders of Euroleague Commercial Assets met on Thursday, June 29 to review the 2022-23 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and 7DAYS EuroCup seasons, to confirm the provisional lists of teams that will participate in the 2023-24 season, and to approve the bylaws for the 2023-24 season, the 2022-23 financial report, and the 2023-24 clubs' economic distribution.

List of teams (alphabetically): ALBA Berlin, Anadolu Efes Istanbul, AS Monaco, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade, EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern Munich, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, Olympiacos Piraeus, Panathinaikos Athens, Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade,Real Madrid , Valencia Basket, Virtus Segafredo Bologna, Zalgiris Kaunas.

 
The EuroLeague format will have one major change designed to increase the excitement of the playoff race. The Play-In Showdown will require teams who finish from the seventh through 10th places at the end of the regular season to play their way into the playoffs.
 
The seventh- and eighth-place teams will face off in a single game whose winner will advance to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, the ninth- and 10th-place teams will meet in a do-or-die showdown that sends the losing side home and the winner to a second game vs. the loser of the 7-8 game for the final ticket to the playoffs. The team with the better regular-season record will be the home team in each game.
 
 
 
The Assembly members also agreed to maintain the suspension of the Russian Federation teams during the 2023-24 competitions.

List of teams (alphabetically): 7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys, Aris Thessaloniki, Besiktas Istanbul, Buducnost VOLI Podgorica, Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana, Dolomiti Energia Trento, Dreamland Gran Canaria, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Joventut Badalona, London Lions, Mincidelice Jl Bourg en Bresse, Paris Basketball, Prometey Slobozhanske, ratiopharm Ulm, Slask Wroclaw, Turk Telekom Ankara, UB-T Cluj-Napoca, Umana Reyer Venice, Veolia Towers Hamburg, Wolves Vilnius

Starting next season, only six teams from each regular season group will advance to the EuroCup Playoffs, instead of eight. Additionally, the top two teams in each regular season group will advance directly to the quarterfinals. The eighthfinals pairings will feature the teams ranked third against the teams ranked sixth in the corresponding groups, as well as the teams ranked fourth against the corresponding fifth-place teams.
 
While the eighthfinals and quarterfinals will remain single-elimination games, the EuroCup Semifinals and Finals will be played in a best-of-three format.

The Assembly members were also informed about the appointment of a new Officiating Director, Daniel Hierrezuelo, who has been a Euroleague Basketball referee for 20 seasons. Hierrezuelo, who replaces Richard Stokes, ranks seventh in total games officiated in Euroleague Basketball competitions since 2000. He has called a total of 448 games, 340 in the EuroLeague and 208 in the EuroCup. In the EuroLeague, he has called 22 playoff games, five Final Fours and two championship games.
 
The shareholders would like to thank Richard Stokes for his dedication over the last eight years and wish him well in his future endeavors.
The decisions made at the Assembly of Syndicate Shareholders of ECA will be brought to the ECA Shareholders Meeting, to be held on July 4, 2023.
